Silicone Moulds: Coasters

Durable Silicone Moulds for Epoxy Resin, Acrylic Resin and Polymer Clay Castings. Food grade so suitable for chocolate and fondant.
Dimensions shown in the name are at the widest point of width and height (internal measurement excluding sides). Our Coaster Moulds have a depth of approximately 5mm.
Add our Special Effect Pigment Powders or Allure Resin Colourants into resin that is cast into these moulds.

Silicone Moulds used with Epoxy Resin

To prolong the life of your mould, remove the casting as soon as it is hard enough. It will continue to harden for days after it is initially hard and release from he mould will become more difficult.
As our moulds are made of high-quality silicone, it is not necessary to use a release agent while the moulds are new. After many castings, the release of castings will become more difficult generating more wear and tear on the moulds. At this point you can prolong the life of your moulds by using our Liquid Wax Release Agent.

Selection of resin to use

General Art Epoxy Resin: All our coasters are about 5mm deep so this resin can be used in all of them. This resin is a little thicker than our other casting resins so air entrainment may be a problem in clear castings at low temperatures. For clear castings, this resin should be used at around 25oC as this allows adequate air release. At lower temperatures this resin should be pigmented so as to hide any small, entrained air bubbles.
Countertop & Shallow Casting Epoxy Resin: This resin is suitable for casting up to 5mm deep so it can be used in these moulds. It gets very hard during curing so remove it as soon as it is hard enough (it will get harder and harder over the next two weeks). Once it is very hard it will generate more wear and tear on moulds during release. This resin has a high flow and will not give you any air entrainment problems.
Medium Casting Epoxy Resin: This resin has a minimum casting thickness of 5mm. It will take longer to cure than the other resins that we recommend for these moulds, but it has the advantage of generating less wear and tear on moulds than Countertop & Shallow Casting Resin. It should not be used in 5mm castings in cold weather as curing time may be too long. This resin has a high flow and will not give you any air entrainment problems.
Acrylic Resin: This water-based resin is usually hard enough to remove from moulds after only 1 hour. It is white (not clear) but beautiful colours can be created with our Allure Resin Colourants. This resin will get very hard over the next week so remove the casting as soon as possible to avoid excess wear and tear on moulds. As the resin is opaque, air entrainment will not be a problem.

All the above resins can withstand the temperature of a coffee mug. Before subjecting epoxy resin coasters to this heat, they should cure for about 2 weeks after removal from the mould. Acrylic Resin coasters should dry for about one week and then be painted with two coats of our Clear Top Coat (Matt or Gloss) to seal them.

Casting resin into your silicone mould

Mix your resin and pour it into the mould. Prior to pouring the resin you can add suitable pigments and colourants and you can use multiple resin layers if required. Carefully use a torch to pop any surface air bubbles if required but take care not to damage the mould. Keep the mould on a flat surface in a protected area that is free from insects and dust while the resin cures. Remove the resin casting from the mould once it is hard.
