Clear Top Coat

A multi-purpose pure acrylic top coat
Available in Gloss and Matt. Mix Gloss and Matt products together (1 to 1) to get a sheen finish.

Suitable for the following applications:

  • Commonly used as a permanent protective matt or gloss coat over acrylic art.
  • A top coat to protect other acrylic/PVA paints and to impart stain resistance. This is especially useful over paints that are used in demanding applications such as paints used on floors (limited to low traffic floors), paints used on craft items that are handled a lot and paints used in high wear applications such as on hand rails.
  • A sealer for porous cement type surfaces.
  • The Gloss product is suitable as a glaze coat for face brick.

UV Resistant so suitable for interior and exterior applications.

How to apply the product

Clear Top Coat can be applied by brush, roller, airless spray or air spray equipment.
When applying to art, three thin layers should be applied using a sponge roller or a technique familiar to the artist. If air bubbles are noted (e.g if using a sponge roller over art) then simple blowing pops them easily. Clear Top Coat should not be poured over artwork as this will result in a thick layer. It is designed as a thin layer product and gives best results in thin films. Avoid pooling in valleys (always spread to a thin coat).

Characteristics

Imparts a gloss or matt finish that is stain resistant and easy to clean. Dries to a hard finish making it suitable for floor applications in low traffic areas.
Mix Gloss and Matt products together (1 to1) to get an in-between sheen finish.
Forms a relatively hard dry film but it still has sufficiently flexibility to be used as a top coat on canvas art that will be rolled.
UV Resistant so suitable for interior and exterior applications.
Despite having a high flow (which is required for penetration and to give a good level finish) it does not tend drip or run excessively. Dilution with a little water is fine if an even higher flow is required.

Not suitable for the following:

Clear Top Coat should not be applied over granite, slate or other natural stone.
Clear Top Coat should not be applied over oil based paints.
Acrylic Pouring Art that contains silicone or other oil based cell forming chemicals should be cleaned, to make the surface relatively oil free, before applying Clear Top Coat.
Cl;ear Top Coat should not be used on floors in high traffic areas such as schools.

Spread Rate

The spread rate is very depended on how absorbent or porous the surface is.
On smooth non-absorbent surfaces, 1 Litre of paint will cover about 16m2 per coat. The spread rate will be significantly lower if it penetrates into porous or absorbent surfaces

Application

Apply with brush, roller, airless spray or air spray equipment.
Apply over acrylic art with a foam roller and blow bubbles to pop them if needed. Foam rollers naturally apply paints in thin films. Do not pour it over art, apply two or more thin coats. On artwork, the maximum gloss is usually achieved with three or four thin coats.
Wash up equipment and spills immediately with water.
