Successfully using Metallic Paints in a pour by mixing them with our Metallic Paint Flow Control
Our Metallic Paints are specifically formulated with a high gloss and high flow. They do not have the ideal flow for acrylic pouring and should actually be thickened first. A common issue noticeable with metallic paints in pours is best described as breaking/splitting or flocculation of the metallic colour. As our Metallic Paints naturally have a high flow, they cannot be mixed with our Original Flow Control which will thin them further.
Mix Metallic Paints with our Metallic Paint Flow Control for all pouring techniques. This pouring medium specifically reduces pigment flocculation and thickens the metallic paints resulting in rich, continuous metallic colours. We have tested this medium in a wide variety of techniques and it works in all of them including Dutch Pours, Cloud Pours, Pearl Pours, Bloom Techniques, Swiping Techniques and Flip Cups.
There is a picture in the gallery on this page that shows the typical difference between metallic paints that have not been mixed with Metallic Paint Flow Control and those that have.
Even with this wonderful pouring medium we still do not suggest doing thick layer pours with only or predominantly Metallic Paints. If you do use only Metallic Paints then keep the paint layer thin to prevent crazing. Paint layers in pearl pours have to thin so these work well with predominantly metallic paints.
Mixing Ratio Suggestions (by volume)
We only give guidelines for the mixing of Metallic Paints below. Please download the PDF document called "Mixing Paints for Acrylic Pouring" for a comprehensive guide of how to mix all our paints for all Acrylic Pouring techniques. Alternatively, you can request us to email you this document.
Not all our Metallic Paint colours have the same flow so thinner metallic paint colours (which have a higher flow) may require less Metallic Paint (relatively more Metallic Paint Flow Control) than thicker colours. For this reason we have given a range in the mixing ratios for some techniques.
It is important that all colours used in a pour have similar flow so the same ratios cannot apply to all metallic paint colours. Remember that our Metallic Paint Flow Control thickens (reduces the flow of) our metallic paints.
Techniques that require thicker paints e.g. Ring Pours, Cloud Pours and Bloom Pours:
1 to 2 Metallic Paint : 1 Metallic Paint Flow Control
Techniques that require average paint thickness e.g. Flip Cups and Swipes:
2 to 3 Metallic Paint : 1 Metallic Paint Flow Control
Techniques that require thinner paints e.g. Dutch Pours:
2 Metallic Paint : 1 Metallic Paint Flow Control : 1 Original Flow Control
Cloud & Pearl Pours (if using our old version of Cloud & Pearl Flow Control which has a black and white label on the front)
Metallic Paints that will form the clouds or pearls:
2 Metallic Paint : 2 Metallic Paint Flow Control : 1 Original Flow Control : 1 Cloud & Pearl Flow Control (It may be necessary to add a little water to this for pearl pours.)
Metallic Paints that will not form the clouds or pearls:
2 Metallic Paint : 1 Metallic Paint Flow Control : 1 Original Flow Control (It may be necessary to add a little water to this for pearl pours.)
Cloud & Pearl Pours (if using our new version of Cloud & Pearl Flow Control which has a colour label on the front.)
Metallic Paints that will form the clouds or pearls:
1 Metallic Paint : 1 Metallic Paint Flow Control : 1 Cloud & Pearl Flow Control (It may be necessary to add a little water to this for pearl pours.)
Metallic Paints that will not form the clouds or pearls:
2 Metallic Paint : 1 Metallic Paint Flow Control : 1 Original Flow Control (It may be necessary to add a little water to this for pearl pours.)
