Antique Gold Metallic Paint

 

Antique Gold Colour and Aged Gold Effects

On its own Antique Gold is a uniform metallic colour, not a colour effect. The colour is a muted shade of gold that is less yellow than Brass which is less yellow than Bright Gold. Painting a single coat of Antique Gold over black gives an even more aged appearance. 
 

Our Bright Gold is a pure gold, 24 carat gold or yellow gold colour. Our Brass is distinctly less yellow than Bright Gold and we previously recommend Brass as an "old gold" colour. Our Antique Gold shade is even less yellow and slightly more reddish than Brass. Antique Gold is, however, still distinctly bolder than Champagne (some people refer to our Champagne as pale gold). 

Antique Gold can be purchased and used as a single colour but for an even more aged appearance we recommend painting it over black. 

  • Paint one coat of black paint first and then apply one coat of Antique Gold over the black. The underlying black dulls the Antique Gold slightly and the presence of some fine brush marks (where more black shows through) contributes to the aged appearance. For this effect, we offer the option of buying our Carbon Black Arts, Crafts & Fabric Paint together with Antique Gold. 

You can create a very simple tarnished gold appearance by purchasing our product called "Tarnish Effect Paint". This same Antique Gold Paint is offered as a colour option with our Tarnish Effect Paints (see "Aged Metallic Effects" in this website).

What you need to know about application

For best results there are specific rules and painting techniques that should be applied so some knowledge is necessary and even practice is recommended. You can download this document from this web page, from the Technical section of this website or we can email it to you. 

Our document, "How to Paint with Metallic Paints" covers both painting with brush & roller and spraying. Below is a summary of the most important points. 
 
The important points when using a brush and roller are the following:
  • Keep a wet edge (critical for large surfaces).
  • Thin the paint a little if required. 
  • Use correct roller movements (when painting a wall move the roller only up and down).
  • Use good quality rollers.
Always start on one side or corner (not in the middle) and keep a wet edge. To assist keeping a wet edge do not paint in conditions that speed up paint drying. Don't paint in direct sunlight or in a breeze and apply a primer or undercoat to porous surfaces to avoid drying by absorption. When painting large surfaces such as walls, a second painter is necessary to do the cutting-in and the person with the roller must go over as much of the cut-in area as possible while it is still wet. If you paint over paint that has partly dried, the pigments will be lifted and will appear different in the dry paint. 
 
A roller will usually give a better finish than a paintbrush. If you require a more uniform finish on smooth surfaces then you can thin the paint with our Original Flow Control or Acrylic Spray Medium. For roller application do not thin the paint with water.
 
Roller movements should be up and down or left to right but not both and not diagonal or haphazard. A second painter is also useful to assist moving the ladder so that the next area can be painted before the pervious area dries too much. The final roller motion in each painted area should always be in the same direction e.g. down. If some areas are finished with a downward roller movement and other areas with an upward roller movement then you will see the difference in the dry paint. 
Sticky rollers may cause slippage. Off-balance rollers will leave the appearance of barring in the dry paint. Use new good quality rollers and soft brushes. 
 
The important points when air-spraying are the following:
  • Thin the paint to increase its flow.
  • Remove the in-line spray gun filter if necessary.
  • Use the correct spray gun nozzle size.
For air-spraying the paint can be diluted with 14% water (140ml water per 1 litre of paint). Our Acrylic Spray Medium is perfect for spray applications that require paint with a high flow. This Medium thins the paint for spraying without any detrimental effects and is usually better than water. Depending on the flow that you require, you can mix Metallic Paint with an equal volume of Acrylic Spray Medium (depending on your spray gun you may not always require so much Air Spray Medium). 
 
Spray guns that connect to a compressor and operate at high pressure (e.g., 5 bar): Usually use a nozzle with about 1.8mm diameter and thin the paint as above.
Spray guns that have their own air generation unit built in usually operate at low pressure (e.g., 0.1-0.2 bar): They may not work with these paints but read our document "How to Paint with Metallic Paints".
