These are beautiful opaque stones that have been semi-tumbled to develop a rounded shape with smooth, gloss finish.
Onyx (like agate) is a silicate mineral. It is a parallel banded mineral of layered chalcedony. No bands are visible on these stones as they are a uniform black colour. Agate and Onyx are both forms of banded chalcedony which in thin slices is translucent. This is a feature which distinguishes agate and onyx from jasper (jasper is always opaque and light does not pass though it). Due to the thickness of these stones they appear opaque and only thin stones would appear translucent.
Pure onyx with distinct parallel bands is rare and valuable but almost all of it sold is fake and modified by dyeing or treating other parallel banded stones. These stones are genuine onyx but lack distinct parallel bands. The stones are predominantly uniform black. (Highly valuable onyx would be white with distinct black parallel bands.)
Longest dimension is 5mm-15mm with average length about 9mm.
These are ideal for use in resin art.
