Stone Coat

Very easy to apply, single component system that does not require any mixing or stirring.
The resin is self-crosslinking and undergoes both drying and curing to form a clear, high-strength finish.
No previous application experience is required.

Appearance

Ideal for textured arts & crafts, highlight areas on walls, for tile borders and much more.
These coatings are based on a self-crosslinking resin and not on plaster or epoxy. Once the resin has cured and dried, you will only see the stones.
The final finish is textured stone with the resin creating a reasonable degree of sheen.
It is not necessary to coat over the Stone Coat but if you want a low sheen finish then you can paint over with our Clear Top Coat Matt.
Tumbled Stones have a rounded shape and glossy surface. Stone chips are rough although the resin gives them a reasonable degree of sheen.

Application

DIY, no need for any experience.
No mixing or stirring is required before use.
Application is simple. Simply use something flat to apply a blob of the Stone Coat onto the surface and spread it to its natural thickness. For small areas you can use a palette knife or spatula and for large areas you can use a spackle knife or plaster trowel. If you overspread the Stone Coat then gaps will appear but any gaps that you may leave in the stone layer can easily be filled with the same product even after the coating has cured and dried.
You will never require a second coat but if you miss any patches, you can fill them at any time.
The application is easy but significantly slower than painting. Apply a blob and then spread it by pushing it into corners and up against previously applied Stone Coat.
You need not worry about streaks or imperfections. Generally there will be none but even if you see some streaks in the wet coating they will not be visible after it has cured and dried.
An important aspect to note is that Stone Coat is thick and takes a few days to cure and dry. This is especially important for exterior application as you require a few days without rain after application.

Surfaces suitable for Stone Coat and preparation

You can apply Stone Coat to horizontal and vertical surfaces. It will will not drip, slide or run on vertical surfaces.
Apply directly onto cement, plaster, wood and art canvas.
As the coating is thick and heavy, Stone Coat should not be applied over large painted areas as the paint underneath may pull off at some stage. If you want to apply it onto painted walls then prepare and prime the walls as you would for tiling. This requires that over 50% of the wall is chipped.
There are many wonderful opportunities for these Stone Coat products, examples include:
  •  You can create a wide border to your floor tiles and fill it with Stone Coat rather than grout. In this case the flexible Stone Coat also acts as an expansion joint around the tiled area.
  • You can apply Stone Coat to profiled wooden strips and secure these to a wall to create a Stone Coat feature.

The stone layer will be relatively heavy. Due to the weight, surfaces must be in a good condition and walls should be prepared as you would for tiling.

Fresh plaster should cure for at least 4 weeks before applying Stone Coat. Wait longer in winter. Plaster moisture should be 15% or below.

Painted surfaces should be chipped to make numerous chip indentations into the underlying cement plaster so that the weight of the Stone Coat does not pull paint off. Any paint that is not in good condition must be fully removed.
After chipping walls, remove dust and apply a keycoat type of bonding liquid (available at hardware stores and tiling shops).
Stone Coat can be applied directly onto cured concrete and plaster and directly onto wood.
Do not apply Stone Coat over oil-based paints, onto tiles or onto chalky or powdery surfaces.

Spread Rates

These products are applied in a thick final layer compared to paint. Paint is typically applied in a coat with thickness of 1/10th of a mm while these products are applied in a layer that is more than 1mm thick (usually 2 to 3mm thick). As such, their spread rate is far lower than that of paint but at least you never need a second coat.
1 Litre will cover an area of 0.4 to 0.5m2.
