Allure Resin Colourants
General Information on Allure Colourants
Suitable for epoxy and water-based acrylic resin systems. (They should not be used in Polyurethane Resins.)
These liquid colourants are usually added to resins after mixing resin and hardener but you can also mix them into resin before adding the hardener.
They are easily stirred into resin and create continuous uniform colour. No battling with lumpy granules of pigment and no settling before the resin cures.
These pigment colourants that are lightfast (non-fading) and will actually help to protect the resin from UV damage.

Types of resin systems these colourants can be used in
- Allure Resin Colourants have been tested in a wide range of Epoxy Resins and in water-based Acrylic Resins for the following parameters: uniformity of colour, negligible impact on resin viscosity, negligible impact on curing and negligible impact on dry resin properties. Compatibility is extremely good at levels up to 6% by mass and in most cases 10% is fine. (You will require significantly less than 6% to get a solid colour.)
- Allure Liquid Colourants are for use in resin systems that cure without the application of external heat. They are sufficiently heat resistant to not be impacted by the normal internal curing temperatures that resins reach.
- These colourants should only be used in resins, not in paint. (We sell a separate range of Liquid Colourants for water-based paints).
- These colourants should not be used in Polyurethane Resins.
How much to use
Adding to clear Epoxy Resins
To achieve translucent colour use very little (even as low as 1-2 drops per litre). Due to the very high pigment level in Allure Resin Colourants, the small 30ml bottles will last for months for most arts and crafts purposes. The 100ml bottles are more suitable for very regular users.
To create translucent colour in a small volume of resin, dip a toothpick into the colourant and then dip the toothpick into the resin. Due to the very high pigment loading of the colourants, one drop will be far too much.
Adding to white water-based Acrylic Resin
Obviously translucent colours cannot be achieved in water-based acrylic resins as these resins are white and not transparent before colouring. The white nature of acrylic resin tends to create beautiful pastel and medium shades with small amounts of colourant. Quite strong shades are created by adding 2 small drops of colourants into 25g of mixed resin. See the third picture which shows resin blocks were coloured exactly like this (2 drops into 25g of resin).
Never use more than 10% Colourant of the resin mass or volume. You will normally require far less than this. At higher addition levels, the risk exits that viscosity, curing or final resin strength may be impacted.
Achieving additional colours
We must caution that when more than one colourant is mixed into resin, the resulting colour, after curing, may be a bit of a surprise. You can use multiple colourants but it is best to check the final colour in a small sample first. We offer a wide range of colourants so where possible only use a single colourant.
If using multiple colourants e.g. using Black and White to get grey, then don't blend the individual liquid colourants together before adding them into the resin. Add both colourants into the resin and not into each other first.
Special Effects
These Liquid Colourants create continuous conventional colours. To create special effects such as Solid Metallic, Translucent Metallic, Colour Shift or Sparkle you need our Pearlescent Pigment Powders.
Precautions
Resin chemistry is developing rapidly and varies between manufacturers and products. It is a good idea to always test additives with your resin of choice.
If adding liquid or powder colourants when the final strength properties of your cured resin are critical, such as in structural applications, then you need to test the cured resin strength to ensure it meets required specifications.
Always take the required safety and health precautions when working with resins.
Keep out of reach of children
All our products should be kept out of reach of children under 5 years and anybody who may tend to place items or liquids in their mouths should be supervised. Even packing can become a choking hazard.
